Chapter Five

Madge plunged into the forest chasing the other wolf. Kia had vanished but Madge followed the noises. The howls from a group of wolves echoed in the east. He took off, keeping to the human paths, knowing Kia would run along the animal trails. He’d reach the invaders first, but Madge wasn’t going to let the Beta fight on his own.

From the number of howls filling the air, at least a half-dozen wolves invaded his property. Kia can’t beat them all.

If that’s his intent, the jaded side of Madge’s mind commented. Maybe this is just a trick to lure me away from my house.

He ground his teeth together. You have to trust someone.

“Kia” His shout evaporated beneath the drenching rain. He hated indecision. Rain slapped his face as he ran through the forest, dodging dangerous roots and grasping branches like a character in a cartoon fairy tale.

The howls changed to barks and growls as he drew closer.

Madge sped up, tripping over a tree branch but catching himself as he stumbled into a small clearing. The river ran twenty feet away. Seven wolves formed a half circle around a single wolf. Kia.

Madge swallowed to clear his throat and stepped forward, moving to Kia’s side. The big Beta wolf pulled his lips back and snarled at him. Madge hesitated. Had he guessed wrong? Trusted wrong?

Then Kia strolled forward, placing himself between Madge and the other wolves. Kia was still trying to protect him.

Enough of that shit. Madge raised his shotgun, and racked the slide, the weapon making the distinctive noise associated with a loaded gun.

“Get off my land or some of you won’t be going home.”

The wolf nearest Madge growled and took a step forward. Before Madge could fire the weapon, Kia leapt forward, taking Madge’s would-be attacker down.

His movement seemed to spark an explosion. The other wolves lunged forward. Madge didn’t hesitate. He’d warned them and he was sick of being fucked with. He fired toward the wolf farthest away from Kia, not wanting to wound the male.

The wolf yelped and went down.

Madge’s stomach rolled and bile rose in his throat. He hated this. He didn’t want to kill them. He didn’t want to kill anyone. He just wanted to be left alone.

Kia took out two of the wolves but the remaining three came at him. They were disorganized. Without an Alpha among them, their attack lacked focus. Kia took them on, but they were getting some good bites in. Blood marked Kia’s fur and his back leg looked dislocated.

Madge couldn’t fire. They were crowded too close and he might hit Kia. He’d loaded his gun with silver pellets. One might accidently strike the wolf trying to help him.

He turned the weapon around and swung, slamming the butt into the skull of one of Kia’s attackers. The animal yipped and jumped away. Madge flipped the gun back around.

“Get out of here or I’ll take you down.” He loaded the next round into the chamber. He knew he sounded like a bad movie but the words kind of rolled off his tongue.
